Expansion mode
Calcutta, Dec. 26 : LN Bangur-owned Andhra Pradesh Paper Mill has lined up a Rs 300-crore project to expand writing and printing paper capacity by 90,000 tonnes.

The company will import a used machine from Germany and refurbish it before setting it up at the Rajahmundry plant.

The new machine will churn out high-margin notebooks, copiers and pigmented paper for printing and publishing.

Shreeyash Bangur, vice-president (corporate planning & business development), said the company was in talks with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and State Bank of India (SBI) to finance the project.

While Rs 120 crore would come from internal accrual, the rest would be either foreign currency or rupee loans.

IFC, a World Bank arm, is a shareholder in the company with a 9.61 per cent stake. It has also extended a credit line to the company.

Bangur said importing a used machine would result in cost savings of 40 per cent vis-à-vis a new one.

Andhra Paper's new investment follows the Rs 635-crore expansion plan the company is already executing now.

The company is expanding pulp line from 90,000 tonnes to 190,000 tonnes, while paper-making will also go up by 25,000 tonnes from 155,000 tonnes now.

It is already one of the prominent players in printing and writing paper segment, estimated at 2.3 million tonnes.

The present expansion includes upgradation of the entire facility to ECF (elemental chlorine free) grade.

Andhra Papers will get the full benefit of the augmented capacity during 2009-10 when its turnover would cross Rs 800 crore against Rs 500 crore in 2005-06.

It will then have a combined paper-making facility of over 250,000 tonnes a year.

The present project also includes replacing the use of re-cycled pulp by fresh or 'virgin' pulp at its Kadiam manufacturing facility. The bigger unit at Rajahmundry already uses fresh pulp.

"The long-term vision is to enter the high margin sector by going up the value chain," Bangur added.

AP Paper Mills to promote farm forestry in wasteland

The benefits

Farmers can gain up to Rs 16,500 per acre on an investment of Rs 7,000 per acre of casuarinas.

To meet the growing demand for seedlings, the company has developed 284 nurseries spread over seven districts of Andhra Pradesh.

Hyderabad, April 28, 2006
As part of its corporate social responsibility programme, Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills Ltd (APPM) has joined hands with the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) and Indira Kranthi Patham (IKP) to help alleviate poverty in tribal areas.

APPM plans to promote eucalyptus, subabul and casuarina plantations on marginal and degraded farmlands belonging to tribals in several districts of Andhra Pradesh, according to APPM General Manager, Mr J.K. Jain.

"The target is to cover 4,000 acres of forestland in four years. It will provide employment to 4,000 families and inflow of Rs 400 lakh per annum in tribal areas. We are encouraging large-scale plantation of pulpwood only in cultivable wastelands of tribal areas," Mr Jain told Business Line in Rajahmundry recently.

Outlining the benefits of pulpwood plantation overconventional crops, Mr Jain said farmers can gain up to Rs 16,500 per acre on an investment of Rs 7,000 per acre of casuarina, compared to a gain of Rs 5,800 per acre on an investment of Rs 7,000 per acre for paddy crop and Rs 15,000 per acre profit on an investment of Rs 15,000 per acre for commercial crops like sugarcane.

ITDA Project Officer, Mr J. Murali said that so far 500 acres forestland belonging to tribals was brought under pulpwood cultivation withAPPM's help. In the next phase, around 1,000 acres of forestland would be identified for a similar initiative. In all, ITDA could identify 22,000 hectares of cultivable wasteland out of 2.8 lakh hectares of tribal land spread over 135villages, he said.

"We are supplying quality saplings free of cost to tribal farmers with a condition that they sell the pulpwood to us. We deduct the cost of saplings at the time of harvesting," Mr Jain said.

As part of the farm forestry programme, the company has till date supplied 341 million quality seedlings and stumps to over 25,000 beneficiariesin the coastal districts of Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore. To meet the growing demand for seedlings, the company has developed 284 nurseries spread over seven districts of Andhra Pradesh.

"Keeping in view the growing demand for our saplings, we have set a target of distributing and planting 68 million seedlings, including 2 million clones for the current year in an estimated area of 11,000 hectares. We have identified 14,761 sq km of wasteland availability in the seven districts we are currently operating, which accounts for 22.69 per cent of total geographical area of these districts," Mr Jain said.

Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills Ltd (APPML), part of the LN Bangur Group of Kolkata, is upbeat on the growth prospects in the post-expansion era.

It expects the topline to grow at an average of 18 per cent per annum and profits at significantly high levels.

The company, which has taken up Rs 635-crore project for expansion, modernisation and upgradation of its pulp and paper making facilities, is set to complete the phase-I of project involving over Rs 500 crore by June this year, the APPML Executive Director, R.C. Mall, said.

In a bid to compensate the delay of around three months in executing the phase-I of project, it is planning to expedite the second phase to complete it by January next year as against the earlier envisaged schedule of March 2007.

On completion of second phase expansion, the company's installed capacity of paper would go up to 1.94-lakh tonnes per annum from the existing 1.6-lakh tpa.

Since a majority portion of Rs 635-crore was going towards meeting quality and environmental requirements and an insignificant portion towards paper capacity expansion, the company is considering a proposal to add a paper machine to
